Housing’s Place in Canada’s Economic Recovery

The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) is one of Canada’s largest single-industry associations. Our membership includes more than 130,000 real estate brokers, agents and salespeople working through 90 real estate boards and associations across Canada. From coast to coast, more than 8,000 brokers run small to medium-sized businesses helping Canadians through their journey to homeownership.

For more than 30 years, REALTORS® have advocated for policies encouraging responsible homeownership. Our members regularly meet with parliamentarians to discuss their local housing markets and policies to promote a vibrant and sustainable real estate industry.

Since March 2020, Canadians’ concept of home has changed, with most now functioning as offices, gyms and schools along with more traditional roles. Now more than ever, it has become clear everyone needs a safe place to call home—regardless of whether it is rented or owned, market or non-market. The situation is urgent and it impacts everyone, from the most vulnerable in our society, such as seniors and the homeless, to aspiring first-time home buyers, such as millennials and new Canadians.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, REALTORS® have diligently participated in efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Just as they have played their part in flattening the curve, they stand ready to take on a leading role in Canada’s economic recovery.

REALTORS® will always focus on helping Canadians find homes. Now more than ever, parliamentarians must also help Canadians feel closer to home.

Canada’s economic recovery plan should prioritize the housing needs of Canada’s most vulnerable populations, while simultaneously promoting responsible homeownership. Creating housing supply and assisting homeowners in improving their homes will create jobs, stimulate the economy and ensure all Canadians have a safe place to call home.
