The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) strongly recommends following the guidelines set by federal and provincial governments and is urging all members to practice safe physical distancing techniques. It’s essential for the wellbeing of our colleagues, clients, neighbours, friends and families that REALTORS® follow all recommendations from health authorities. REALTORS® should limit travel outside their home to essential trips only, such as seeking medical attention, picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy or buying groceries.
CREA fully supports the recommendations made by many boards and associations as well as regulators across Canada that members avoid face-to-face real estate practices, including conducting or taking part in open houses.
We’ve already taken steps to ensure that REALTOR.ca is consistent with these recommendations. We’ve removed references and promotional features that take visitors to information about open houses on REALTOR.ca and all DDF® partner sites. We’re also working on making virtual tours and links to social media sites that support broadcasting (Facebook Live and Instagram Live) more visible on your listings.
We know open houses and showings traditionally play an important role in the purchase and sale of a property; however, the health of our REALTORS® and the public must take precedence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Remember, REALTORS® determine the services they offer clients and you are never obligated to either conduct or attend showings or open houses.
We have been asked by many for our views about the market, how it’s doing and when we can expect to see a return to a “new normal.” We believe the response to this question will depend on how well we respond to the advice of health authorities and how quickly and completely we remove ourselves from circulation to beat the spread of this virus. We are all feeling stress and uncertainty from this pandemic but we wish to reiterate that at this time only essential business should be conducted, and that it should be done following the best advice of health authorities. If we all do our part, we can expect to come back to healthy real estate markets before long.
