Burnout is Not a Badge of Honour: The REALTOR® Reset with Jhanelle Peters

Sharing tips to help REALTORS® recognize the signs of burnout.

REALTORS® often operate with a high-performance mindset, much like professional athletes. It’s a powerful tool in business, but it can also be a slippery slope to burnout.

Psychotherapist Jhanelle Peters, former mental health clinician for the Toronto Raptors, joins REAL TIME to explore the pressures of entrepreneurial careers like real estate.

Listen in to learn about the gradual building of burnout and how to spot it early, the importance of reframing “work-life balance,” how integrating joy and recovery into your daily routine fuels both your career and your well-being.

The conversation begins by discussing what factors can lead to burnout. Peters recounts a number of professions that, due to high pressure, may be at a higher risk. People like high performance athletes, actors, C-Suite executives, and, you guessed it, REALTORS®.

People operating in competitive careers, like being a real estate professional, may have trouble slowing down. “What if somebody blows past me? What if I don't do as well as I'm supposed to if I take a break? And I think a lot of people have that in common,” Peters says.

Peters discusses some of the simple things that may help like exercise, eating healthy, being social.

But, what about when it’s not enough?

Well, then you might experience burnout. Although there’s no clinical definition, Peters says, “The best way to describe burnout is, I like to say it's what happens when you avoid being human for too long.”

She continues to explain more about what that looks like. What it means. And, how it feels.

You don't earn rest, you deserve it.”

Janhelle Peters, Psychotherapist

This episode is not a replacement for therapy, but Peters offers insightful, REALTOR®-specific tips on how and why managing burnout is important for you and you career.

Throughout this 65-minute episode Peters and host, Shaun Majumder, discuss burnout with compassion and a relatable humorous edge. A great episode no matter where you are in your mental health journey, it’s available to listen to or watch at your convenience.
