Memorable Client Requests that REALTORS® Have Received

The silly, the strange, and the shocking.

REALTORS® are proud to work with a wide range of clients, who bring with them every sort of request you can imagine. Popular asks include market insights, location, budget, size and amenities, as well as viewing schedules, home inspections and financing guidance.

We asked REALTORS® to share the most memorable requests they’ve received from their clients. Here’s what REALTORS® from across the country told us (anonymously).

  1. One REALTOR® had a client who said the home had to pass electromagnetic detection levels.
  2. One buyer asked a REALTOR® if they could find him somewhere with sun and a large lot to grow their medical marijuana.
  3. One REALTOR® had a client who really liked a nanny at one of the homes he was interested in. “He wanted me to ask the sellers if he could hire her,” he says. “The sellers were not impressed. He ended up buying the home but was unsuccessful at scooping the nanny.”
  4. One seller took dog ownership to a whole other level. “I have lots of stories, but the one that stuck out to me was meeting with a seller. … They told me that the dog was included with the sale because the dog was familiar with the house in the yard, and they wanted to leave the dog with it,” he says. “Obviously I told them nobody is going to take the dog. That's not going to happen. I'm also not willing to advertise that. They got it. It wasn’t malicious in any way.”
  5. One buyer, clearly a cat lover, asked if they could have 10 or more cats in the house.
  6. A client insisted on a double-car garage with a double door and no side entrance. The garage would need to be insulated and finished with drywall – for his Corvette. “The first thing he would do was go straight to the garage to check it, and there were many homes that we walked out of before seeing the interior because it was not good enough for his ‘baby’.”
  7. “I had a seller refuse to leave the home because they thought I negotiated too hard for my buyer and shortchanged them,” one REALTOR® says. “They wanted more money to vacate. The lawyers had a good laugh with that. Closing was delayed three days, but we got them out.”
  8. A buyer told a REALTOR® they wanted the closing scheduled for an exact date and time so they could step into the house for the first time at that precise moment.
  9. Another REALTOR® says: “A client once texted me, ‘Do you know of any good lovers around here?’ She meant movers.”
  10. “During a showing I got, ‘Is it okay if I take my shirt off?’ We were enjoying the view on the deck. He needed to get the full experience, I guess,” a REALTOR® says.
  11. “‘I only want a home that faces exactly east, not north, not northeast,’ is what one buyer told me,” a REALTOR® says.
  12. “I did have a very fun and eccentric client who gauged property on how fantastic potential parties could be,” says a REALTOR®. “Like one place had high ceilings in the living area and beams and he was giddy with the idea of him playing his grand piano while aerial silk artists performed above him. I can’t wait to be invited to one his parties. When asked how long he played piano, he said he just started learning. I loved his enthusiasm and joy for life.”
